The US government may be shut down, but taxpayers are bearing the cost for Mar-a-Lago celebration tents

Happy holidays!

At loggerheads with Congress over moneying his signature border wall, president Donald Trump closed down big swaths of the federal government at midnight on Friday (Dec. 21). Approximately 800,000 federal workers are impacted, a lot of whom will stay on furlough without pay if the shutdown continues.

But even as much of the federal government grinds to a stop, Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort still needs camping tents for the winter celebration season– and taxpayers are footing at least $54,000 of the bill.

According to government spending & data, Grimes Occasions & Party Tents Inc. of Delray Beach, Florida was paid $54,020 by the United States Trick Service on December 19 for “TENT LEASING FOR MAL.”

An employee named Honey who responded to the phone at Grimes Events & & Party Tents informed Quartz, “We are providing tents for the Mar-a-Lago New Year’s Eve celebration, yes.”

The Secret Service also utilizes tents for security purposes, typically as holding areas for cars and VIPs.

Last year, the Trick Service spent $26,457.28 to rent lights, generators, tables and tents for the Mar-a-Lago New Year’s celebration, according to Newsweek. Guests will pay< a href="">$1,000 per person to attend the 2018 Mar-a-Lago New Year’s Eve celebration, up from$750 last year and$575 the year before, according to released reports. Club members will pay $650 this year, up from $600 in 2017. Ticket rates do not include 20%gratuity and 7%tax, which improves the price of a $1,000 ticket to $1,270. Another notable Trick Service expenditure, this one for$41,250 and paid to BSE Efficiency of Peoria, Arizona, is for”GENERATORS AND LIGHT TOWERS RENTAL FOR MAL.”It is unclear if the generators and light towers are specifically for the New Year’s Eve party; both were paid the exact same day. There are only 2 contracts associated to Mar-a-Lago posted at today time; both go through the end of May. Any others might not be made openly readily available for weeks or perhaps months to come. It is not known whether Trump will in fact spend this year’s holidays at Mar-a-Lago. He remains in Washington, DC, at least for now. Nevertheless, federal government records

show the cash for this year’s tents, lights, and generators has currently been 100 %obligated.< iframe allowfullscreen="true" allowtransparency="true" class=" twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered"data-tweet-id ="1077255770725601280" frameborder="0"id="twitter-widget-2"scrolling="no" style="position: static; visibility: visible; screen: block; width: 500px; height: 251.83 px; padding: 0px; border: none; max-width: 100%; min-width: 220px; margin-top: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px; "title= "Twitter Tweet"> The Secret Service informed Quartz formerly that it”can not talk about particularly nor in basic terms the ways, methods, resources, expenses,

or numbers we make use of to perform our protective responsibilities.”Recently, Quartz reported the Secret Service could invest more than$90,000 this winter season on Florida golf cart leasings to shadow the president while he strikes the links, bringing the company’s overall golf cart leasing expenses to approximately $400,000 because Trump took office– an apparent modern-day record.
