The world’s fattest man is facing jail in the United States after being accused of stealing a haul of goods and stashing them in his mobility scooter.
Paul Mason, who once had to be removed from his home by a forklift truck, has piled on 17 stone after getting his weight under control due to the breakdown of a relationship.
The 57-year-old also plans to returning to the UK from the US for free NHS treatment for his morbid obesity.
Paul’s weight has “gone into freefall” since splitting from his fiancée and has gained 16 stone to 35 stone.
He could also be jailed for grand larceny after being accused of nicking £175 worth of aftershave, perfume, phone chargers and earphones.
A police report stated: “Store security advised the male party, later identified as Paul Mason, failed to pay for the items he had in his basket totalling approximately $225.
He’s due in court on November 15.
Paul is also desperate to get a double knee replacement and to have an operation to fix his stomach staple so is keen to return to his native Ipswich, Suffolk, so he can get it for free.
In the US both procedures would set him back more than £100,000.
David Pounds, who is producing a TV documentary on Paul’s plight, told the Sun: “He has put back on weight as he copes with his relationship break down and depression. His food addiction has really got hold of him.
“Now he has been accused of shoplifting. Paul has had safety nets in the past but now there is nothing to catch him.”
However residents of his home town won’t be welcoming Paul, who once weight 70 stone, back with open arms.
Carer Maria Garnham, said: “I know it’s an illness and I don’t begrudge anyone for wanting to get treated.
“But to come back to the UK and use NHS money when it could be spent on better things, like local mental health, is infuriating.
“I suppose he will need housing in Ipswich again as well.”
Paul once had to have firemen remove him from his bedroom because he was too fat to get out normally during an emergency.
He was cramming down 20,000 a day including pizzas and three takeaways a day.
Back in 2010 Paul, a former postman, had a bypass that shrunk his stomach to the size of an egg.
He got down to 19 stone and met his ex-fiancée Rebecca Mountain after she contacted him after seeing a documentary about him.
However producer David said the relationship “lost balance” and the pair had “different goals”.
After they parted ways Paul sank back into his old habits and now rarely gets out of bed and just stays in and gorges.
His story will be told in The World’s Fattest Man, The Big American Adventure. Made by Nevison it is due to wrap up this year.
